In China, QR-code payments are common, but visitors do not need to rely on a single app or payment method. Set up at least one usable backup before departure.
Can I link an international card to Alipay or Weixin Pay?
Official visitor guidance says that Alipay and Weixin Pay support the linking of eligible international bank cards. Supported card brands can include Visa, Mastercard and other payment networks, but the experience depends on the card issuer, identity checks and each platform’s current rules. A linked card is not a guarantee that every merchant or transaction will succeed.
Set up before you travel
- Download the official payment app from your device’s app store.
- Register using a phone number the service currently accepts.
- Follow the app’s identity-verification and international card-linking process.
- Test a permitted low-value payment where possible; do not depend on an untested wallet for your arrival transfer.
- Keep another payment option such as an eligible physical card and some local cash.
What if an international card is rejected?
Check whether your issuer approved the wallet binding or payment. The bank, the app and the merchant may apply different requirements. The limits, fees and accepted brands can change, so rely on the details shown in the official app at the time of the transaction instead of outdated online screenshots.
At stations, shops and attractions
Confirm the displayed payment options before paying. Many businesses accept mobile payments, while accepted card networks may vary. Keep the merchant receipt and verify the amount in your wallet or bank statement.
Practical tip: Screenshots of an app setup guide are not a substitute for testing your own card. Prepare two independent ways to pay before traveling between cities.
