Ride-hailing can be a convenient way to move around cities in China, especially when your destination is not next to a metro station. DiDi offers app-based booking options, and official Shanghai guidance describes how travelers can switch the interface to English.

Before requesting a ride

Use the official DiDi app or the supported service embedded in a major payment or messaging app. Check that your chosen phone number and payment method work. The available languages and payment choices can differ by app version and channel.

A typical journey

  • Enter your pickup point and destination. If your hotel has a Chinese address, keep it available for accurate navigation.
  • Choose the vehicle category after checking the displayed estimate and any relevant terms.
  • Wait for the driver assignment and note the car’s license plate and location in the app.
  • Before entering, confirm that the actual license plate matches the app record.
  • Follow any identity confirmation prompted by the service, and complete payment through the supported channel.
  • Keep the trip receipt if you need to review a charge or report an issue.

English interface and communication

Official guidance from Shanghai describes an English language option in DiDi settings and messaging support. The exact menu layout may change, so use the current app labels rather than relying on older screenshots. Keep your destination written in Chinese, particularly for hotels, stations and complex attractions.

A private transfer or an app car?

An app ride is useful for many routine transfers. For multi-stop sightseeing, luggage-heavy airport arrivals or travelers needing a guide, a separately quoted private transfer may be more practical. Do not assume your sample itinerary includes a vehicle unless the service scope explicitly says so.
