China Travel Apps: A First-Time Visitor Checklist
A practical checklist for first-time visitors using payment apps, rail tickets, ride-hailing and offline translation in China.

A smooth first trip to China is less about installing every popular app and more about preparing the few tools your actual itinerary requires. Prioritize payment, transport, communication and offline backup.
1. Payments
Alipay and Weixin Pay are common mobile payment options. Official guidance notes that eligible international cards may be linked, subject to the card issuer and platform’s verification rules. Set up the wallet in advance and keep a backup payment method.
2. Rail travel
If your trip includes high-speed trains, check the official China Railway 12306 English website. Passport identity verification and the correct station name matter more than installing several competing ticket apps.
3. City transport
DiDi or supported ride-hailing functions inside payment or messaging apps may be useful in cities. Official Shanghai instructions describe an English interface for DiDi. Save your hotel’s Chinese address and check the license plate before entering a car.
4. Translation and navigation
Prepare a translator with offline language resources and a map or route tool that works on your phone and in your location. Test these before travel rather than assuming the app will work with an unstable connection. Keep key addresses in Chinese and English.
5. Mobile data and useful backups
Review roaming, local SIM and travel eSIM options. A data-only eSIM does not necessarily include a local telephone number or SMS. Save booking confirmations and important addresses offline, and agree on a meeting point with your companions.
Your departure-day check
Before you leave, ensure that the payment app has been verified, your train bookings match passport details, and your arrival address is accessible offline. Software interfaces and eligibility conditions can change; rely on current official service instructions.
Explore travel ideas: Your exact app needs depend on whether your trip is a Beijing city break or a multi-city journey. Use sample itineraries as inspiration, not as confirmed availability or a package price.
