China Travel SIM, eSIM and Mobile Connectivity Checklist
Compare roaming, local SIM and travel eSIM options and plan a backup before arriving in China.

Reliable mobile connectivity helps with maps, translations, booking references and contacting accommodation providers. Before traveling to China, compare international roaming, a local physical SIM and a travel eSIM based on your phone and itinerary.
Three ways to get connected
International roaming may be the simplest option if your home operator offers coverage and a reasonable travel package. Check data limits and roaming charges before departure.
Local SIM services are available through approved operators in China. Official guidance says foreign visitors can bring valid passports to telecom service centers to apply for a SIM and activate mobile service. Plans, locations and identity-verification requirements vary.
Travel eSIM can be useful on compatible devices, but availability, activation, data routing and voice/SMS capability depend on the provider and plan. Do not assume a data-only travel eSIM gives you a Chinese phone number or supports all local app registrations.
Check your phone before leaving
- Confirm whether your device supports eSIM and is unlocked for the selected provider.
- Verify the plan’s China coverage, activation method, duration and fair-use limits.
- Ask whether the plan includes voice calls or SMS, if you need booking confirmation codes.
- Save hotel addresses, rail tickets and emergency contacts offline.
- Install or prepare a translation tool that can work without a live connection.
Arrival-day backup
Keep a printed hotel address or an offline screenshot and agree on a meeting point if traveling with others. Airport Wi-Fi and public hotspots are useful backups, but you should not depend on them for critical identity or payment tasks.
Service note: Networks, plans and availability change. Verify the current terms from the carrier and device manufacturer before purchasing.
