What documents do foreign travelers need?
China Railway’s official guidance explains that foreign passengers may use valid passports under the applicable rules. Online booking on the English 12306 website accepts eligible foreign passports. Passenger names and document numbers should match the travel documents used at stations.
Typical booking workflow
- Select the correct departure and arrival cities and stations. Some cities have several high-speed rail stations.
- Register or sign in through the official 12306 channel or another authorized seller.
- Complete any required identity verification with your passport details.
- Choose the travel date, train, class and passenger information.
- Review the full fare, change and refund terms before confirming payment.
- Save the booking information and carry the same passport you used to book.
12306 or a third-party booking platform?
12306 is the official operator channel. Authorized third-party platforms may offer different language support or service layers, but you should check seller fees, customer service responsibility and the original ticket conditions. Do not assume a displayed fare is the final amount until all fees are visible.
On travel day
Check the station name, departure time and required arrival buffer. At the station, follow signs and staff guidance for passport-based identity verification, gate access and boarding. An itinerary sheet is not itself a train ticket.
